Since 2016, the Lize Puppet Art Colony’s Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Program has served as a creative platform for contemporary puppeteers, visual storytellers, and interdisciplinary artists. The program is dedicated to providing an environment that nurtures both creation and exchange, encouraging practices rooted in puppetry or expanded into new and cross-disciplinary art forms.
Located on the Lanyang Plain in Yilan, Taiwan, “Lize” sits beside the Dongshan River and its sandy coastline, adjacent to a nationally protected 52-jia Wetland, a haven for migratory birds. Surrounded by nature and immersed in the simplicity of rural life, this setting offers artists a reflective and inspiring space to observe, connect, and create.
During the residency, artists are provided with time, space, professional support, and local connections to deepen their artistic practice, experiment with materials, and engage in dialogue with both the local community and international peers. Through research, creation, and public presentation, artists become part of a vibrant ecosystem of contemporary puppetry, one that continually redefines the boundaries of object theatre and performance.
As an internationally connected platform for artistic innovation, the Lize Puppet Art Colony warmly invites artists to engage in imagination, experimentation, and collaboration. Through their creative process, residents are encouraged to respond to the relationships between land, nature, and people, fostering sustainability and a meaningful connection between art and everyday life.
