Myra Su is a puppeteer and multimedia artist based in Chicago, USA. Her background is in shadow puppetry, but her work also explores crankies, tabletop puppetry, and video. Recently, she has become interested in combining digital technology with analog puppetry to create unique object-centered stories.
In addition to her independent work, Myra is a touring performer with Manual Cinema, an Emmy Award-winning shadow puppetry collective. She is also a co-curator of Nasty, Brutish & Short, a puppet slam held six times a year that has become a staple of the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival’s programming every January.

STRIPES
It is the end of the world. Humans are no more. However, factories continue to operate, traffic signals still run on clockwork, and computer systems remain online. Everything in the city is quiet now except for the humming and beeping of machines…
STRIPES follows a sentient barcode scanner through the bowels of an automated factory as it searches for purpose and meaning. By combining analog puppetry with digital technology, the show explores this post-human world through the perspective of machines. Different types of digital tech are used as the puppets’ sensory organs, which are also integrated with technology in the theater. As a result, puppets can directly impact lights and sound on stage as they interact with their environment. With a fully responsive feedback loop between stage and puppet, STRIPES strives to find magic in the mundane – in the humble barcode.
