Riverscape: Flowing Connection
Multidisciplinary Artist| Hsiang-Hsin “Malikah” Wang
“Riverscape: Flowing Connection” is a performance exploring the cultural and ecological transformation of the Dongshan River. Envisioning a future where human dominance over rivers diminishes, the work reimagines the river as a living entity with its own rhythms, agency, and patterns, emphasizing the profound interdependence between humans and rivers.
Rather than presenting the subject from a purely intellectual perspective, the performance invites audiences to connect with the river on emotional, sensory, and spiritual levels. Through the interplay of objects and bodies, the piece interprets the evolving relationship between humans and the river, portraying the river not as a passive backdrop but as an active force shaping the narrative.
The use of fragmented and unexplained spaces mirrors the unpredictable nature of rivers, embracing ambiguity as a creative strength. The nonlinear storyline reflects the complexity of the river, encouraging contemplation of the fluid and intertwined coexistence of humans and rivers.
“Flowing Connection” offers a rich, multisensory experience, utilizing sustainable materials, symbolic imagery, and found object artistry to highlight the interconnectedness of art, nature, and community. It envisions a future where humans and rivers coexist harmoniously, as equal participants in a vibrant, living ecosystem.
