Artist Introduction
Carla holds a Master’s Degree in Theatre from the University of Bologna and began her career in children’s puppetry. Over time, she expanded her artistic repertoire to include acting and music, performing with various theater companies while mastering ancient ballads, storytelling, and puppetry techniques.
Her fascination with the expressive potential of light and shadow led her to specialize in shadow puppetry, a medium she has seamlessly integrated into her artistic creations. In addition to her personal projects, Carla teaches shadow puppetry workshops for children and adults in schools, theaters, and hospitals. She also serves as an instructor at The Atelier of Figures, a school dedicated to storytellers and puppeteers.

Mazu’s Wish is a shadow theater piece collaboratively created by workshop participants under the guidance of Italian shadow theater artist Carla Taglietti. The legendary story of Mazu is reimagined through a contemporary, cross-cultural lens. Inspired by the Mazu Riding the Phoenix statue at the Yong-An Temple in Lizejian, the performance poses a thought-provoking question: Does Mazu, who carries the wishes of so many, have a wish of her own?
Blending physical movement, innovative shadow techniques, and poetic visual storytelling with traditional Taiwanese folk songs, the piece explores the profound connections between people, nature, and the universe on this island surrounded by the sea.
